Today, I am going to see the Elder Law attorney to submit my mother's paperwork for her Medicaid appt. She will be running out of money in just a few months, and NEEDS Medicaid to cover her longterm care.
I just read that the Republicans have just submitted their proposal for Medicaid cuts that would decimate its entire budget. What in the world would I do if my mother's care will not be covered? Makes me want to vomit, just thinking about it.
PLEASE write your Congresspeople and advocate for Medicaid for Elderly indigent people. Feel free to cut and paste the following letter into yours:
Dear Congressperson [Last Name],I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my strong opposition to any proposed cuts to Medicaid, especially as they relate to nursing home care. My mother is currently a nursing home resident, and I fear that such cuts would have a devastating impact on her well-being and quality of life.My mother requires full-time, specialized care that can only be provided in a nursing home. She has no other financial means to cover the high costs associated with her care, and without Medicaid, she would be forced to leave the facility. This would not only jeopardize her health but also place an overwhelming burden on our family as we would be unable to care for her ourselves. Medicaid is a lifeline for families like mine, ensuring that our most vulnerable loved ones receive the care they need in their later years. It’s the safety net that allows people to live with dignity, even when their personal savings and assets have been exhausted. Cuts to Medicaid would leave many families like mine in an impossible position, having to choose between financial ruin and sacrificing their loved ones' care. First of all, if you are pretty smart (system savvy I like to say) or have someone at your side who is, it is pretty easy to qualify. Go to any Board Certified Therapist or psychiatrist and get yourself a diagnosis. Anything will do, because whether you are using bipolar or depressive disorder it isn't the disorder ITSELF that's important. It is WHY YOU CAN'T work because of the disorder that mattters.
So let us say your "diagnosis" is "Depressive disorder".
Now you make application that you cannot work and want SSI.
They send you to a CE examiner who examines you for why you can't work. Words matter here. For interest "I get anxious in a room with other people and I can't see or hear and I lose continence, and it takes me days to recover from a fit". Pretty much will get you an A+. You qualify. Now it is important to STAY IN TREATMENT or SSI can wipe away your monthly funds at once.
As you can see here, this is why those on the Streets of San Francisco (or any other city) don't qualify and can't keep funds. They can't do the drill. The can't stay in treatment. They don't take their meds and really melt down and don't know how to work the system. They just get lost in it and so does their funds.
But someone who is even minimally manipulative (yes, this is what I was researching about) can do this quite easily.
The system is quite flawed. Any way you look at it the system is flawed, unwieldly and a mess. And if EITHER party has a clue how, or the will to change it, I don't hope to hold my breath until it happens. Those who are truly in need are falling through the cracks, often to their deaths. Those who know how to USE the system will continue to milk it for all it's worth.
I am becoming SUCH a cynic.

I have not seen or heard anything that indicates our seniors are going to be cut off. It is an entirely different qualification system and there is solid proof they truly are at need and not milking the taxpayer so they don't have to take care of their own family without sacrifice.
Oh, if you do send letters, make sure and include that the person in question worked and paid taxes in the USA. After all, that's what supports these programs.

So far since he started his term, he has said and done nothing about Medicaid. He has not mentioned it at all. The news outlets are going by what he said about it *in the past*.
Here's the only thing that he's done in 2025 regarding any healthcare:

President Trump rescinded former President Joe Biden’s order that extended the enrollment periods for Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans in most states, and granted additional funding for third parties aiding enrollment in ACA insurance. While ACA enrollment nearly doubled under the Biden administration to about 24 million people, those gains are attributed primarily to government subsidies that lowered the cost of ACA premiums. The effect this rescission will have on enrollment trends is one thing to watch in the coming years.
2. Drug Pricing.
President Trump issued an order rolling back policies to limit drug spending by Medicaid and Medicare. In particular, he rescinded an executive order that asked the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to consider new payment and healthcare models to limit drug spending. The former Biden-era order had prompted CMMI to announce in 2023 its intention to test three models aimed at lowering drug costs, none of which have fully gotten off the ground yet. The purpose of President Trump’s rescission is reportedly to facilitate better price negotiations with drug companies, as the second round of Medicare drug price negotiations are slated for 2025. Thus far, 15 drugs have been added to the negotiation list, indicating the administration’s intention to lower prices for those drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy."

No one needs to clutch their pearls yet. Nothing has happened to Medicaid.

Should there be changes you won't be alone in facing them whatever they are, but let's not get too upset until we wait and see.
Very few congress/senate folk are going to want to mess too much with Medicaid, Medicare and so on.
A wait and see attitude is best with any new administration.
