I am in a bit of a tough situation. My mom displayed symptoms of UTI - abdominal pain, moaning with pain in the evening, etc. she is unable to speak but I can tell from her facial expression and body language that she is in terrible pain. Her urine smelled so bad. I took her to the doctor and he did blood and urine analysis. The urine showed Bacteria, so he said he said he will order a urine culture, but because my mom would not sleep at night from pain even with Tylenol I demanded that he write an antibiotics, he did write her CIPROFLOXACIN 500 MG twice daily while we wait for the culture to come. My mom has been taking this powerful medicine for 4 days now. Symptoms did improve but not drastically. I just got a notification that her urine culture came in, when I read it says she has a type of bacteria Ecoli that CIPROFLOXACIN is ineffective for this type of bacteria. Today is a holiday and the doc office is closed until Wednesday. Should I stop giving my mom this antibiotic? It’s such a high dosage it really makes her weak and it’s so heavy on her stomach. I really just don’t know what is the right thing to do.
MDs are more and more hesitant to order Cipro without good cause due to it's tendencies to have one nasty side effect of rupture of tendons. You medication should have come with a full write up on all this; that's required for anyone taking cipro to understand. No harsh exercises for a least two months while taking and after taking.
I would call whoever is covering for your doctor. There has to be someone.
But, in lieu of finding someone I would continue this medication as prescribed. The more normal way of prescribing today, or the most COMMON is Cipro 500 mg two times daily times 3 days.
We do know she is positive for e coli. She is getting one of the correct drugs for treatment. However, bacteria is getting smart and smarter and more and more resistant, so when the "sensitivities" come in it will be better info for you.
Sorry. Such a common problem in us old gals!
